I became hooked on this author’s series when the first novel came out titled, Down and Dead in Dixie, which I found to be completely enthralling! As I checked the author’s website, I saw this short story was coming out soon. When it became available, I purchased it. I am not a fan of electronic reading for a couple reasons: (1) My eyes aren’t able to read for long on any device; (2) I think it unwise to be dependent on a device, and (3) I love the feel of a book in my hands that is always available to read.In this very short story, readers are introduced to a set of twins who have very different lives and personalities. Christine is a strong independent woman, successful and single; she is able to face any situation straight up, speaking whatever is on her mind. Caroline is trapped in an abusive marriage; she has tried unsuccessfully many times to leave her husband only to be brought back and made to pay for leaving. Finally, Caroline has had enough and with Christine’s help she begins her journey to freedom, safety and healing.
For me, the first novel had so much more tension and adventure whereas this one had a modicum of it. I think it could have become a much more developed book. However, I did enjoy Vicki’s tale and the tie-in she makes with the first novel in the series with a few characters from Down and Dead in Dixie. Readers will appreciate perhaps that it is a fast story and I guarantee you will be left anticipating the next installment in the Down and Dead Series.

It is hard to understand why women stay in abusive relationships but Ms. Hinze did an excellent job of explaining. The hope that an abused woman doesn't allow her to expect anything better and then finding that hope made for a fast paced inspiring story
Strong emotion of being in a abusive marriage. Thankfully with her twin's help she got out. ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Vicki Hinze has written another heart-stopping thrill ride. Caroline is abused and has no way of escape until her
sister Christine comes up with a plan. Her rich, abusive husband is hot on the trail. You just have to read the latest
offering from this prolific author's Down and Dead series. One of the best quick reads ever! Caroline wants a new life, but her husband wants to end it. Will Caroline find peace in life or in death? Read the book!

Caroline is married to Martin, a controlling, manipulative brute who physically and mentally abuses her. Martin uses the classic tactics of abusers. He isolates her from family and friends, systematically erodes her self esteem, and denies access to a phone, transportation, and money. To add insult to injury, he has power, influence, and ample financial resources.
As is the case with many victims, she is reluctant to leave. She fears the consequences of getting caught again more than anything and chooses to endure her hellish home life. Her sister, Christine, comes up with an escape plan and Caroline just has to summon the confidence and courage to follow through.
The book opens with Caroline, battered and bruised, after yet another beating. The descriptions bring the scene to life. The characters are introduced as the plot unfolds. The dialogue is realistic, the pacing is fast, and the end is satisfying and conclusive.
Overall, I enjoyed this novelette and would read others in the series.
A must read in a wonderful Down and Dead Series,..
Caroline Easton reaches within herself to say enough is enough she will finally let her sister Christine help her. They have a plan and they're going to put into action.
Martin promised her one day if he she ever left him she would pay, and he meant it. When she and her sisters friend meet with Jackson Grant the man who will protect her and get her safely where she can start living her life..there's just one thing. Will this work? Is there a chance Martin will find her?
She turned her gaze back to Jackson. "So can you help me?"
"Depends." Jackson leaned forward, folded his hands on the table. "Will you trust me to help you?"
Caroline likes Jackson he's so sweet and kind to her...something she isn't used to. She feels safe with him. Jackson will not allow Martin to hurt ever again. It sickens him for what she went through.
Definitely read a Down and Dead in Dixie...Vicki Hinze has written an amazing series and I can wait for more to come.
Love the characters in this series.
DOWN AND DEAD IN EVEN IS BOOK 2 IN DOWN & DEAD, INC. CAROLINE IS IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH HER HUSBAND, MARTIN. WITH THE HELP OF HER SISTER, CHRISTINE AND FRIENDS IN DOWN AND DEAD, INC., SHE IS ABLE TO LEAVE HER ABUSIVE HUSBAND AND START HER LIFE ALL OVER AGAIN.
DOWN AND DEAD IN EVEN IS THE SECOND BOOK IN A SERIES. I RECOMMEND YOU READ THE SERIES IN ORDER. IT WAS A VERY FAST READ FOR ME. THERE WAS ALOT OF ACTION AND SOMETHING CONSTANTLY GOING ON. VICKI HINZE DID A GREAT JOB WITH THE CHARACTERS ESPECIALLY EXPLAINING THE EMOTIONS AND ABUSED WOMAN GOES THROUGH. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO READING THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU READ THIS SERIES.
